Monet's dreamlike paintings transformed London's image forever.
The Courtauld Institute's newest show looks at Claude Monet's misty paintings of the Thames, which changed how people see London.
A recent exhibition at the Courtauld Institute focuses on Claude Monet's unique way of painting London's foggy scenes. During his various visits in 1899-1901, Monet painted about 100 of the popular sights: fog-shrouded Houses of Parliament and Waterloo Bridge. Color and light in London, even smog, had surreal-a magical-effect.
Monet's work was singular among his contemporaries for capturing light in its fleeting nature, even the solid structures as fluid in the fog. While earlier artists tended to paint pollution as dark and heavy in its oppression, Monet captured it as a veil of "pulsing" light. His London series changed forever the approach of art to the urban landscapes, placing fog, light, and even pollution as integral to the beauty of city scenes.
